01/16/2007 - Columbia, SC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The South Carolina Gamecocks hope to score an upset tonight as the streaking Kentucky Wildcats come to town for an SEC tilt.
Kentucky was 4-3 after the first seven games this season, but the team has not lost since December 2nd, a string of 10 straight wins. The Wildcats, who are currently ranked 25th in the country, are 14-3 overall and 3-0 in SEC play after posting a 64-60 decision over a pesky Mississippi State squad on Saturday.
South Carolina enters this contest with a three-game losing skid that includes an 84-50 thrashing at home against national powerhouse Florida. The Gamecocks have lost their first two SEC games by 58 combined points and are clearly a home underdog tonight.
Kentucky owns a commanding 37-7 advantage in the all-time series with South Carolina, and the teams will meet again on February 7th in Lexington.
It is surprising that Kentucky was able to knock off Mississippi State on Saturday despite shooting just 36.2 percent from the floor. Fortunately, the Wildcats earned a 15-1 edge in points from the foul line and limited the Bulldogs to 39.7 percent shooting from the field. Also, Kentucky committed a low total of eight turnovers in the contest. Randolph Morris posted 17 points to lead the way in the victory, while Joe Crawford pitched in 14 points. Ramel Bradley added 11 points for the Wildcats, who are netting 71.8 ppg while holding opponents to 63.8 ppg on 37.2 percent shooting from the field. Morris is averaging 16.4 ppg on 60 percent shooting from the floor, and he is pulling down 7.9 rpg as well. With 37 blocks, the big man is an intimidating force in the post. Crawford (13.6 ppg) and Bradley (13.4 ppg) are solid contributors as well.
After shooting 59.1 percent from the floor in the first half against Florida, South Carolina dropped to 20 percent over the final 20 minutes. The Gamecocks finished that contest with seven assists against 13 turnovers, while the Gators posted 23 assists with only nine giveaways. USC struggled mightily at the defensive end, permitting Florida to connect on 64.2 percent of its field goal attempts, including a 9-of-14 effort from three-point range. Tre' Kelley scored 24 points for South Carolina, but no other player on the roster managed double figures. Kelley is averaging 16.3 ppg as the obvious number one option at the offensive end. He is also dishing out 4.7 apg, while Brandon Wallace supplies 11.3 ppg and 9.2 rpg.
