The 27-year-old has been out since April 12 with back spasms. His only start of the season came on April 7 when he allowed three runs -- two earned -- on four hits with three walks and one strikeout in taking a no-decision against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

To make room on the roster, pitcher Brian Bass was designated for assignment. The right-hander was roughed up in three relief appearances this season, pitching to a 12.79 earned-run average with eight walks and four strikeouts.
